Igot up early to do a little reconnaissance on my own before my meeting with Maggie. While I had no doubt that she would do diligent research from a human perspective, I wanted to get a sense of White Knuckle Bay from below. What wouldn’t her storybooks tell?

Could Opheliandra really exist? Was there a way she could help me?

It was strange to think there was another race of ocean creatures who lived so close to Merme. She belonged to a whole new society of beings I’d never heard of.

Nymphs? It gave me cause for worry.

While there were hundreds of thousands of fish and mammals and sharks and crabs and squid, the only other Mer-people that I was familiar with were our enemies from Poseidon’s world. Our boys and men gave their lives to stop their advance. Prince Neptune and Poseidon were mortal enemies. If nymphs existed, whose side would they join? Which mermaids did they want to help? The tale that Maggie told said that Opheliandra was a friend. Whose friend? Mine? All I had was hope.

I put on my pink shells. I was actually getting used to wearing them now and I thought they might give me a professional edge with the nymph. I slipped out of my bunk and swam out the Squirt House porthole. There was no reason to worry I’d be discovered or tracked. Without a new House Mum to replace Tasma, most of the Squirts had taken to sleeping late and lounging through both school and chores. I was about to head to White Knuckle Bay to do my scouting, but something stopped me. It was low tide on the beach. The sun was in the right spot. My favorite time of morning. I would have sworn I wasn’t looking for him, but still I went back to those shores.

To his beach.

For the runner.

Every man walking by made my head turn.

This new task, Opheliandra and her potion, if she was real, it would be the final piece of the puzzle. Procreating was all I’d ever wanted. My whole life. It was so close to attainment. I should be ecstatic. I should be checking out White Knuckle Bay right now. So why was I here, floating. Waiting. Watching for my runner to jog by on the sand?

Henderson.

Maggie’s perfect brother.

My breath hitched in my throat.

There he was.

Like clockwork, he came running down the beach, completing his usual work out, his chest flexing and drawing heavy air. Lungs pumping. He looked effortless and smooth up on the dune.

I bobbed lower in the surf, so as not to be seen.

The words from last night bounced around in my brain.

He liked me, just like this.

You’re unexpected.

You say what you’re thinking.

In others’ estimations, I had always been found wanting. My voice didn’t work. No human male wanted to hump me. I hadn’t graduated into being a Fert. But last night, Henderson had come to my side without me even asking.

I found myself mesmerized by the familiar rhythm of his legs. Steady footfalls east to west.
